What is industrial ventilation for?

Industrial ventilation covers the installations that renew, extract and treat air in commercial and industrial premises. It answers three distinct needs that are often confused.

Workplace hygiene and health: removing stale air, dust, vapours and process odours, and introducing enough fresh air. Fire safety: smoke extraction, which clears smoke and hot gases to keep escape routes usable — in buildings open to the public this is a regulatory obligation, not a choice. Building performance: controlling humidity, preventing condensation and protecting both the structure and the equipment.

These three functions do not call for the same equipment, the same materials or the same inspections.

Smoke extraction: an obligation, not an option

In buildings open to the public and workplaces, smoke extraction has a precise purpose: keeping escape routes usable long enough for occupants to leave and for the emergency services to intervene.

  • Mechanical extraction: extract fans operating in a hot atmosphere
  • 400 °C / 2 h rating: the fan keeps running for two hours in 400 °C smoke

Standard ventilation equipment does not meet these requirements. And a smoke extraction system that has never been tested is one nobody knows will work on the day.

Method

How is an installation sized?

Sizing rests on an airflow study, which determines the required flow rates and the pressure losses across the network.

  • The volume of the premises and the ceiling height
  • The number of occupants and the occupancy profile
  • The nature of the pollutants: dust, vapours, heat, humidity, odours
  • The regulatory flow rates applicable to the activity
  • Network geometry: lengths, bends, sections, materials
  • Acoustic constraints, often overlooked yet decisive in offices

Two frequent errors. Undersizing the flow rates: the air is not renewed, pollutants accumulate, the installation fails its purpose. Ignoring pressure losses: the fan does not deliver the flow rate promised on paper, and the gap between study and reality can be considerable.

The flow rates to handle

They follow from the airflow study and the applicable regulations. This is the primary factor.

The ductwork

Length, sections, materials, accessibility. In a refurbishment, routing ducts through an existing building often represents a substantial share of the works.

The level of requirement

400 °C/2 h certified smoke extraction, fine filtration or an installation in an explosive atmosphere do not use the same equipment as ordinary extraction.

Heat recovery

A double-flow system costs more to buy and recovers a significant share of the heat in the extracted air. The calculation is made over the operating life.

At handover we provide measured flow readings, network drawings, equipment datasheets and smoke extraction test reports. An unbalanced installation does not deliver the flow rates the study specified.

Every project is quoted after a site visit and airflow study.

Frequently asked questions

Is smoke extraction mandatory?

In buildings open to the public and in workplaces, yes. The obligation and the sizing depend on the type of establishment, its category, its area and its height. We check what applies to your building during the site visit.

What does a 400 °C / 2 h fan mean?

That it is certified to keep running for two hours in smoke at 400 °C. This is the condition for mechanical smoke extraction to do its job during evacuation and emergency intervention. A standard ventilation fan does not meet it.

What is the difference between single and double flow?

Single flow extracts stale air and lets fresh air in through vents. Double flow mechanically supplies filtered fresh air and recovers heat from the extracted air through an exchanger: more efficient, but it needs a second duct network.

How often should a ventilation system be serviced?

At least once a year for an office network, more in dusty or food-processing environments. Smoke extraction installations are subject to specific periodic checks.

Do you work on an existing network?

Yes: diagnosis, flow measurement, cleaning, compliance upgrades, fan replacement or network extension.

Do you measure flow rates at handover?

Yes. Balancing and flow readings are part of commissioning, and the measured values are provided to you.

Do you also handle air conditioning?

Yes, ventilation and air conditioning are often designed together on the same building.
