How to choose professional air conditioning in Morocco

Split, VRF, rooftop or chilled water: the right choice follows the heat load, the zoning and the site climate, not the headline price.

Choosing professional air conditioning is rarely decided by the brand. It is decided by three parameters: the building's actual heat load, how that load is distributed across the day and between zones, and the site climate. Two buildings of equal floor area, one in Tangier and one in Marrakech, do not call for the same solution.

Start with the heat load

Before comparing any equipment, you need a calculated estimate of the gains: orientation and glazed area, wall and roof insulation, occupancy, lighting, heat-releasing equipment, fresh air requirements. That calculation gives the capacity needed, zone by zone.

Oversizing is paid for twice: at purchase, then every month. An oversized machine short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly, wears its compressors and delivers mediocre comfort despite high consumption. Undersizing, by contrast, shows up during the first heatwave.

Site climate changes the sizing

The coast

In Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier or Agadir, outdoor temperatures stay moderate but humidity is high. The latent load — the energy spent removing moisture from the air — becomes significant. Equipment selected on total cooling capacity alone can cool correctly and still leave the air feeling damp.

Inland

In Fez, Meknes, Beni Mellal or Marrakech, the day-night swing is pronounced and summer peaks are high. Sizing must be checked against the site's design outdoor temperature, not a national average. Winter heating is not an afterthought in these cities: a reversible system avoids a second network.

The south and arid zones

Dry heat, high outdoor temperatures, dust. Two consequences: rated performance falls as condenser air temperature rises, and protecting the coils against dust determines how the plant holds up over time. Condenser cleaning frequency must be written into the maintenance contract from the start.

The four equipment families

Split and multi-split

One or more indoor units connected to an outdoor unit. Economical, quick to install, suited to small areas and independent spaces: branch offices, isolated offices, local retail.

Its limits appear with numbers: beyond a dozen outdoor units, managing facades, noise and maintenance becomes a problem in itself.

VRF

One or more outdoor units serve many indoor units with variable refrigerant flow. Control is fine-grained, consumption follows the actual load and each zone keeps its own setpoint.

This suits open-plan offices, hotels and clinics, particularly where some zones need cooling while others need heating. Heat recovery systems then move heat from one zone to another instead of rejecting it.

Rooftop

A self-contained unit installed on the roof, with ducted supply and return. It handles large open volumes without taking up floor space or a plant room.

It is the usual choice for supermarkets, showrooms, gyms and workshops. Two conditions: a roof able to carry the load, and safe access for maintenance.

Chilled water plant and fan coil units

A central plant produces chilled water distributed through a hydraulic network to fan coil units or air handling units.

This is the architecture of large buildings and of sites combining comfort cooling with process requirements. Higher initial investment and a plant room are needed, but expandability and service life are greater.

Deciding without getting it wrong

Some practical markers:

  • Under 150 m², independent zones: split or multi-split.
  • Open-plan offices, hotel, clinic, simultaneous heating and cooling: VRF with heat recovery.
  • Single large volume, accessible roof: rooftop.
  • Large building, process loads, planned extension: chilled water.

The criteria people forget, and that cost money

Diversity. A building never reaches peak load everywhere at once. Adding up zone-by-zone capacities systematically leads to oversizing.

Noise. Outdoor unit sound levels are checked before positioning, not after the neighbour complains. The question matters most in hospitality and healthcare.

Maintenance access. Equipment that cannot be reached is equipment that is not serviced. Access hatches, clearances around units and roof walkways are decided at the layout stage.

Spare parts availability. A range with no parts stock in Morocco turns a three-hour fault into a three-week shutdown.

What a serious quotation contains

A usable quotation includes the heat load calculation that justifies the capacities, precise equipment references with seasonal performance figures, the network layout, fresh air treatment, electrical protection, commissioning with recorded readings, and the scope of the warranty. A lump sum without these items cannot be compared with another lump sum.

The final item to examine is not on the quotation: the forecast annual consumption. That, rather than the difference in purchase price, decides the real cost of the installation.
